On March 20th and 21st, Chairman Dr. I-Chou Liu of the Central Election Commission (CEC) attended the 2017 Association of Asian Election Authorities (AAEA) General Assembly held in Manila, Philippines. During the meeting, India passed on the position of Chair to the Philippines and Russia was elected as the next Vice Chair. The Central Election Commission of Taiwan was selected as a member of the Executive Board. Aside from Taiwan, the other four government bodies in the Executive Board are India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, and Pakistan. The Executive Board position enables Taiwan to further cooperate with other member-states on this official international platform, as well as enhance the global visibility of our country’s contributions to promoting democracies worldwide.
In accordance to this year’s theme for the meeting, “Gender Mainstreaming and Social Inclusiveness,” our commission’s Director of Electoral Affairs, Dr. Mei-Li Kao, delivered a presentation titled “Gender Mainstreaming and Social Inclusiveness in Taiwan’s Elections. “ During the presentation, she gave an introduction about our country’s legal provisions that protect the rights of women and indigenous people to engage in electoral activities as well as the measures employed to assist the elderly and people with disabilities during elections.
